MyFitnessPal Security Breach]
It was reported on March 29, 2018 that more than 150 million users’ data of a popular fitness app called MyFitnessPal had been hacked. Users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords were stolen. This company then immediately notified their users through emails and in-app messaging after they had noticed than there was unauthorized access to the data on February. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, the identity and whereabouts of the people/s who had orchestrated the breach which stole the data of millions of people is still unknown.
Under Armour, which is MyFitnessPal’s parent company, claimed that the users’ financial information were not affected by the breach of data in any way. The damage caused by this incident is considered moderate since the company does not collect any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to access their system without being noticed.
And though having your dietary and fitness progress stolen may not look like a big deal, it still has some power when you consider the bigger picture. For instance, the app has the capability to know the precise performance and location of its users. This means that if another person has the capability to access a user’s account, then they will also hold the capability of knowing about the user’s location and how fast the user is currently going. The users are then in potential danger and can be tracked by whoever holds their data.
This situation is a very important reminder for everyone that in this modern age of technology, any personal data can be easily hacked into. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.
1. Setting Strong Passwords
While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though it may seem like a very small detail, the hackers may potentially have a hard time in cracking your password, giving your company more time in fixing the problem and securing your data.
2. Reading Through the Terms and Services Conditions
While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is very important that the users are aware of the capabilities of the app itself.
While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
